Gallatin National Forest

Right next to Yellowstone National Park, sits this 1.8 million acre National Forest

The fabled Yellowstone, Gallatin and Madison rivers, renowned for their blue ribbon trout fishing, flow through the heart of some of Montana's most spectacular public lands in the Gallatin National Forest.

Gallatin is rich in wildlife, alpine vistas, rugged wildlands and a spectrum of recreation opportunities. Visitors enjoy wildflowers, trout fishing, photography, alpine and nordic skiing, snowmobiling, camping, backpacking, river floating, horseback riding and more.

This 1.8-million acre forest spans six mountain ranges and includes two Congressionally-designated Wilderness areas, the Absaroka-Beartooth and Lee Metcalf Wildernesses.

There are 2,800 miles of trails for backpacking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, biking and snowmobiling.

A visitor center is located at Quake Lake on the Madison River, site of the 1959 earthquake and landslide.
