Chief Joseph (Nez Percé) History at Henry's Lake

"I am tired of fighting.... from where the sun now stands, I will fight no more."

In 1877, when his band of Nez Percé was forced from theirMap of Chief Joseph's Retreat home in the Wallowa Valley of western Oregon, provoking a war between the Nez Percé and the U.S. Army, Chief Joseph led them over more than 1,500 miles of mountainous terrain, fighting off or evading troops at every turn, only to be halted near the Bear Paw Mountains, just forty miles from the safety of the Canadian border.

The flight of the Nez Percé brought them through present day Island Park and into the Henry's Lake Area.  During this time the US Calvary set up a command post at Staley Springs, and Fished Henry's Lake and the surrounding streams to feed the army.
